models with a steer-by-wire system next year. The goal for the system is to eventually allow autonomous steering in certain situations, and NIssan is in advanced testing of this technology as well.
To make Autonomous Emergency Steering work several systems have to be working together. Data from the front-mounted radar and camera, the two left and right rear radars, and the five laser scanners attached around the vehicle are analyzed to find the obstacle and make sure there is nothing around the vehicle. The steer-by-wire system then kicks in to move the car out of danger.
Nissan has said previously that it thinks it can have this technology in showrooms in between three and five years.
