Michael Schumacher has been handled a 20-second penalty after having overtaken Fernando Alonso in the last corner of the Monaco Grand Prix.
The seven-time word champion passed the Ferrari driver in the last seconds of the race taking advantage of a mistake of Alonso, just after the safety car left the track. The problem is that stewards considered that the race still finished under the safety car.
According to rule 40.13, which says “"if the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pitlane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the checkered flag as normal without overtaking," Schumacher was handled the 20-second penalty.
With 20 seconds being added to his final race time Schumacher sees himself drop from sixth place to 12th leaving the points. This handles Alonso sixth place, with a climb of 18 places in an amazing race, and Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi the last spot on the points.
Mercedes has appealed the decision to penalize Michael Schumacher. The final decision on this matter will now be taken by the FIA's Court of Appeal. The FIA said the appeal is strictly against the decision, not the penalty itself.
