smart fortwo comes out of the box

The new generation of the smart fortwo is being presented ahead of its official launch in the autumn of 2010. The updated city car receives fresh interior look, an upgraded exterior and gets even more environmentally friendly.

Customization will also increase with the new generation as it will be available with new option colours in terms of finish, tridion safety cell and the cabrio soft top. The LED daytime driving lights and new alloy wheels offer even more options to customize the vehicle.

Marc Langenbrinck, Managing Director smart brand says "We continue to work hard to make our smart models even better and more desirable in every respect. The new generation smart fortwo is perfect for our times. It is attractive and has style. It also boasts high quality materials, visible attention to detail, even more comfort and enhanced functionality. And don't forget that smart drivers often have an unconventional way of thinking and look for alternatives. The new generation smart fortwo with its wide range of engines and opportunities for customisation meets their requirements."

The new generation will once again be available in the BRABUS version. The most significant change can be found on the new rim design for the Monoblock VII alloy wheels. For this version the BRABUS double-pipe rear muffler has also been modified. The new smart fortwo BRABUS also includes a cruise control option.

The new fortwo generation will be available with even more efficient engines, with the 40 kW cdi turbodiesel becoming the CO2 champion with emissions of 86 g/km. The work of smart engineers in both the engine control unit and exhaust system made a 4.2 l/100 km consumption possible for both the 45 kW mhd and the 52 kW mhd versions. This represents CO2 emissions of 97 g/km in the combined cycle. With a consumption of 4.9 l/100 km, the 62 kW version has CO2 emissions of 114 g/km. Finally the BRABUS version saw its power increased from 72 kW to 75 kW and delivers a CO2 consumption value just under the 120 g/100 km barrier (with 119 g/100 km).

For the launch of the new generation smart has prepared a special limited edition: the smart fortwo edition lightshine. Based on the passion equipment line this edition will be available in the new exterior colours matt light green or light blue metallic as a coupé and cabrio. Customers will be able to opt between a 52 kW mhd petrol engine, a 62 kW petrol engine or a 40kW cdi engine.

Since the launch of the first model in 1998 more than 1.2 million smart fortwos have been sold. The smart city cars are available in 43 countries and during this year this number will grow to 45 as Argentina and Indonesia will join the brand’s growing market.
