180 GE trucks.
The Swiss Army liked the G-Class’ robust, proven technology and its easiness to drive by soldiers. It won out against three rivals in four tests by the military, including tests on trails, rough terrain, mountain passes and low temperatures.
Seventy-Five percent of the new trucks will be the four-seat station wagon G-Class, and the rest will have shelter-type bodies.
The trucks will be used to transport personnel and equipment around the country. The new G-Classes come stability control and front disc brakes, which were not on the older Puchs.
The military trucks will be powered by Mercedes-Benz’s OM642 diesel with 181hp and 295lb-ft of torque and a five-speed automatic transmission with a top speed of 160km/h (99mph). They are equipped with permanent all-wheel drive, reduction gearing and three differential locks. They have a ground clearance of 210mm and can ford water 600mm high. The dampers offer another 260mm of articulation. The trucks can take on inclines with a 64% gradient.
While the military has made its choice, for the purchase to begin, it has to be ratified by the Swiss Parliament.
