Motor Group Pavilion Intergrated Experience Hall in Yeosu, Korea, Hyundai has teamed with Jonpasang Media Artist Group to create the hypnotic Hyper Matrix. It is three walls comprised of 3,500 invidual styrofoam boxes each of which are attached to a pneumatic ram, and each box is controlled by a logic board. The boxes are arranged in 5mm intervals.
The boxes are computer controled and basically act as dynamic pixels. However unlike traditional pixels that are either on or off, the boxes can move an infinitie distance within a certain range. That gives the images a sense of depth that is impossible with a traditional screen. Finally, tuning the lighting just right means that the farther a box extends, the darker a shadow becomes.
