The US Army, Air Force and Navy have taken delivery of 16 GM fuel cell vehicles for evaluation purposes. Each branch is evaluating them individually for their real world use and possible future purchase.
The three branches all have bases in Hawaii, and the vehicles will be used there. These first 16 vehicles and their evaluation will be funded by the Army Tank Automotive Research Development Engineering Center, Office of Naval Research and Air Force Research Laboratories.
The vehicles being used by the military branches travel 200 miles on a charge of hydrogen and can be refueled in five minutes.
"These fuel cell vehicles will help move the U.S. Army in the Pacific toward a sustainable path that reduces energy security challenges and strengthens our energy independence," said Lt. Gen. Francis J. Wiercinski.
