Volkswagen Eco Up Uses Natural Gas to Emit 79g/km of CO2

Volkswagen Eco Up Uses Natural Gas to Emit 79g/km of CO2

Volkswagen has one more Up for us at the Geneva Motor Show called the Eco Up that is fueled by a compressed natural gas-fueled engine.

The Eco Up uses a 1.0 liter, three-cylinder engine with start/stop tech and battery regeneration that is part of VW's new EA211 engine family. It produces 68hp and 90Nm of torque. Acceleration is pretty slow taking 15.8 seconds to get to 100km/g, but it uses 2.9kg of natural gas every 100km and emits 79g/km of CO2. Top speed is 168km/h.

Volkswagen claims that a kilo of natural gas contains about the same energy as 1.5 liters of gasoline. The car stores 11 kilograms of natural gas under the vehicle's floor. The only downside to the setup is the loss of a spare tire because the natural gas is stored in its place.

The Eco Up will go into production and be on sale in Germany and possibly other European countries. Volkswagen did not disclose a price for the model.
