The luxury brand Infiniti was introduced by Nissan in the U.S. market in 1989. The goal was to win the luxury car segment in the United States that was not covered by Nissan's more mainstream image. The brand was created at about the same time as Toyota created the two premium brands Lexus and Acura. Infiniti began to export to the United States exclusively by imposition of the Japanese government so that it became more profitable to export cars more expensive to the United States of America.
The brand launch was made with the Q45, a second generation model based on the JDM Nissan President. The aim was that the Q45 directly competed with the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Jaguar XJ, Fleetwood Cadillac and Lexus LS.
The second model of the brand was introduced in 1990. The Infiniti M30 was a two-door model based on the Nissan Leopard and was produced for three years as an alternative to the Lexus SC.
In 1991, Infiniti released the G20, the third model of the brand. This time the new model was based on the Nissan Primera. In 1993 it was the time of submission of the J30, a four-door coupe based on the third generation of JDM Nissan Leopard.
In the mid 90's Infiniti remained behind the Lexus and Acura in sales, with sales of Q45 and G20 reborn failing on the boost sales objective.
In 1997, Infiniti released the QX4, a modified version of Nissan Pathfinder received premium-quality interior. With this model, the Infiniti has become one of the first brands to offer a midsize SUV luxury, preceding the launch of the Lexus RX, Acura MDX and the Mercedes-Benz ML320.
Years 2000
In the new century Japanese firms began to feel the effects of Japanese asset prices and Infiniti, with its low attractiveness seemed headed for foreclosure. The brand re-dedicate itself to developing a range of sporty, dynamic and powerful cars.
The effort to follow in the footsteps of BMW started with the redesigned 2002 model Q45, but it was the G35 that the improvements came to the sales of Infiniti in 2003. The G35 was voted Motor Trend Car of the Year in that year.
Immediately after the launch of the G35 came FX crossover momentum that followed the success of sport coupe. This model was produced using the same components of the G35 and was designed according to the tastes of American consumers.
In 2004, Infiniti added a four-wheel drive version of the sports sedan G35 in order to compete with models from Audi and BMW. To compete with the Toyota Land Cruiser/Lexus LX470 Infiniti launched the QX56 in 2004.
In 2007, Infiniti unveiled a redesigned version of the G35 sedan, a presentation that would be followed in 2008 by the release of the model G coupe, the G37. That same year, the luxury brand of Nissan introduced the EX35 compact crossover.
In 2008 Nissan Motors President and CEO, Carlos Ghosn signaled the arrival of Infiniti to Europe at the Geneva Motor Show. The brand now offers four models in the old continent: the FX37 and FX50, G37, the G37 coupe and the EX37.
