Since the beginning of 2010 BMW Group Classic has expanded its mission to Motorsports. It has created a new division that will be offering assistance classic competition vehicles that carry the BMW and Mini badges. Besides the advice on servicing and repair, through parts procurement, the new division will also help in the complete restoration.
BMW Classic is responding to the growth of races with historic cars, with Oldtimer Grand Prix, Festival of Speed, Mille Miglia, Le Mans Classic, experiencing an unstoppable boom. The dedicated Motorsport division was created so that the BMW and Mini vehicles remain raceworthy, providing the same comprehensive service for classic racing cars as BMW Classic does for road vehicles.
With the main customers expected to be the owners of racers from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Friedrich Nohl, who heads up the Motorsport division of BMW Group Classic says “Anyone who owns a high-performance car like that will also want to drive it.”
In the future, BMW Group Classic wants to offer their help, even to the extent of replicating special components, but also maintenance, repair or rebuilding.
To signal the start of operations there are currently two demonstration models being built by specialists: a Mini Cooper S Mark 1 dating from 1964 and a 1970s BMW 1602 Touring.
“Both will be rebuilt from the ground up, in other words starting from the bodyshell,” says Friedrich Nohl.
According to Friederich Nohl the new Motorsport division has been set up to meet the growing demand for skilled servicing of racing classics, adding that the vehicles mostly originate from the period between 1960 and 1990.
