Lewis Hamilton won his second consecutive race with a triumph in the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Brit finished ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas and closed the gap on the championship, which still belongs to his
Mercedes team-mate, the German Nico Rosberg.
Vettel surprised everyone with a flying start which led to the leadership of the race. However the two-stop strategy from
Ferrari would eventually be beaten by Hamilton and Mercedes' one-stop, which turned out to steal victory from Vettel.
With Hamilton's victory and Rosberg's fifth place, the championship standings are getting very even. After seven of the 21 races of the championship the German is leading with just nine points ahead of the Brit.
Third place Valtteri Bottas took the first podium of the season, also the first podium from
Williams since last year's Mexican Grand Prix.
With a new poor start from pole position Hamilton could not resist a brilliant start from Sebastian Vettel. The British driver had to defend himself from the attacks of his team-mate and after a slight touch between the two Mercedes drivers Rosberg ended up going off track and dropped to tenth position at the end lap one. Vettel and Hamilton kept fighting each other for victory in Canada.
To everyone's surprise Vettel entered the pits to switch to super soft tires on lap 13, which indicated a two-stop strategy as the mandatory tires in Montréal were soft. Hamilton would come in for his only stop six laps later. After Vettel's second stop, the German driver ended up more than seven seconds behind Hamilton. The German still closed the gap on the world champion, but the Mercedes driver always kept a safe distance.
Behind Valtteri Bottas,
Red Bull's Max Verstappen had to defend himself from Nico Rosberg's attacks, but his last attempt to overtake the Dutch driver almost ruined his whole race after he made a spin off track. The German still managed to keep fifth ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and the other Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo.
Completing the scoring places in Canada were
Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez, eighth and tenth place respectively. Ninth place was taken by the
Toro Rosso's Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr. who came from 20th place after being penalized over a gearbox substitution.
