compact in January 2013. In the eight years and two months since sales started in 2004, Suzuki has sold three million Swifts worldwide. 

All of the early cars were produced in Japan and exported, but in 2005 Suzuki added production of the Swift to its factory in Hungary to serve Europe. Since then, production has also started in India and China. 

The first major upgrade to the car came in September 2005 when the Switft SportSuzuki Swift SportJapan, 2011 > present9 photos
was released to Japan. It won the 2005/2006 Japan Car of the Year Special ‘Most Fun' Award and the 2006 Automotive Researchers' and Journalists' Conference of Japan (RJC) Car of the Year Award. It was also the Indian Car of the Year in 2006. Production hit one million cars in 2008.

Sales were so good in Europe, that the second generation Swift started production in Hungary in June 2010. Production did not start in Japan until September. The second generation won the 2011 RJC Car of the Year award. Sales hit two million in January 2011. In 2012, Suzuki started producing the Swift in Thailand. 

Over the eight years of production 13% of the 3 million cars were sold in Japan, 45% in India and 23% in Europe.
