1. Volkswagen Golf (414 Points)

The new, seventh generation Golf was among the first of Volkswagen's cars to use its new MQB modular platform. VW is still launching engines and trims for the car. The estate version will come in 2013. 

2. Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT86 (202 Points)

The BRZ/GT86 twins received accolades all year and has been nominated for several national awards. Toyota and Subaru developed the car together. Subaru was responsible for most of the car's engine, and Toyota did the direct injection system. 

3. Volvo V40 (189 Points)

The new V40 follows the trend of giving a previous car a revolutionary change. The new car is a five-door hatchback with advanced safety features, including a pedestrian airbag.

4. Ford B-MAX (148 Points)

The B-Max shares a platform with the Fiesta. It is among the many Fords available with the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. It competes against the C3 Picasso.

5. Mercedes-Benz A-Class (138 Points)

The third generation A-Class has an all-new design. An AMG version with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine  and all-wheel drive will come next year. The car has been among the fastest selling cars Mercedes has ever had in terms of pre-orders. 

6. Renault Clio (128 Points)

The new Clio has far more dynamic styling with a longer wheelbase, length and width. Like many European manufacturers, Renault is transitioning to smaller engines. The Clio's base engine is a 900cc turbo

7. Peugeot 208 (120 Points)

The redesigned 208 is significantly lighter than the previous generation, and it has even more room. Peugeot is also using more three-cylinder engines in the car. 

8. Hyundai i30 (111 Points)

The new car was designed by Hyundai in Germany and has six engines with less than 100g/km of CO2 emissions. There is also a GT wagon version. 

9. European Car of the Year

The European Car of the Year has been awarded since 1964. The award is voted on by 58 automotive journalists from 22 European countries. France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain have six member each. Other countries have fewer members.
