Review

The second generation of the 308 was launched in 2013.

The 308 is aimed squarely at the European C-segment market that makes up about 33% of European auto sales. The car uses Peugeot’s new Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2) that allows it to cut 140kg from the current car and ride on an extended wheelbase.

The looks of the car have been altered but not significantly. The longer wheelbase means shorter overhangs in the front and rear. It gets a two-piece grill with a wider lower section, rather than the current one piece. The front of the car is also blunter than the current generation. Otherwise, the car is relatively simple with slab sides and large windows. The 308 is probably not going to win any competitions for its looks, but it gives the car extra interior room with the same length as the previous car.

In addition to cutting overall weight, the EMP2 also allows for a new suspension layout and latest generation of stability control. It reduces weight, shortens overhangs, lowered center of gravity and electric power steering.

The car is launched with five petrol and diesel engine options with as low as 82g/km of CO2 emissions. Some models are available with a new six-speed automatic transmission.

In 2014, the car is available with Peugeots upgraded BlueHDI Diesel engines that combine catalytic reduction and particulate filtering to reduce NOx by 90%. The version in the 308 is the cleanest offered with 82g/km of CO2 emissions.

The look of the new 308Top models come standard with full LED headlights.

The interior gets Peugeot’s i-Cockpit that includes a smaller steering wheel and elevated instrument panel with a 9.7in touchscreen infotainment system. It will also offer new safety systems like blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, emergency collision alert and automatic emergency braking.

308 SW

The design of the 308 SW is a stretched version of the standard 308 hatchback and is meant to be clean and stylish. The only major change is the added window in the rear cargo area. The simplicity is carried into the interior with seats that fold flat into the floor in a single action, and the cockpit is the same as the standard 308.

The 308 SW has 610 liters of rear cargo capacity in its 4.58m-long (180.3in) and 1.47m-wide (57.87in) body. Despite its size, the car weighs 140kg (308.6lbs) less than its predecessor.

The engine range is shared with the standard 308, including the BlueHDi version with 85g/km of CO2 emissions.

308 GT

In 2014 Peugeot revealed the sportier GT versions of the 308. The 308 GT is available in hatchback and wagon bodystyles.

The 308 GT is available with two engines, a 205hp 1.6-liter THP with Stop&Start system and a manual six-speed gearbox and an 2.0-liter engine BlueHDi with 180hp with a six-speed automatic transmission.

According to Peugeot the THP engine has an average fuel consumption of 5.6l/100km and average emissions of 130g/km. With 285Nm of torque, this version reaches 100km/h in 7.5 seconds. The diesel version BlueHDi has an average fuel consumption of 4.0l/100km and produces 103g/km.

The 308 GT gets some design modifications that make it easily identifiable. The front of this dynamic version now has the lion on the grille with three horizontal blades on both sides of the logo and LED lighting. The 308 GT have been equipped with top-class headlights clusters composed of 62 LEDs.

The turn signals have also been given a distinctive design in the 308 GT versions. Dynamic sequential operation, from the interior to the exterior, give the car greater technological identity. These elements were put above the new air inlets that provide additional air to the engine.

The 308 GT receives black mirrors that merge with the tinted windows. Vehicles also receive 18 inches diamond wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tires.

The sports version of the 308 also received some updates in the suspension to hand it a more sporty driving capacity. The ground clearance was reduced by 7mm in the front and 10mm on the rear.

The interior of the 308 GT was upgraded and has red stitching and aluminium details on the pedals and door trim.

Peugeot transfered the "i-cockpit" design to the 308 GT, but it includes GT graphics in the infotainment system and driver display. The engine sound is more audible inside the cabin.
