will be publicly revealed on July 29.

The i3 is the world's first mass produced car with a body made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The process to get the carbon fiber is a major undertaking. The raw carbon fiber in being made in Washington State in the US at the same facility that makes the carbon fiber for the Boeing 787. It is shipped to Germany to be formed into body panels and then shipped again to Leipzig for final assembly.

The cars will be purely electrically powered but will offer a rear-mounted two-cylinder engine option as a series hybrid to keep the batteries topped up for consumers with range anxiety.

We will know more about the production i3 when BMW reveals it at the end of the month. Sales are scheduled to start in the fall.
