Just moments after the green flags were waved, Antonio Giovinazzi lost control of his car on the main straight and crashed into the pitwall, forcing a real safety car. The race restarted on lap seven with everyone on slicks and Vettel losing ground because of his early stop.

The German then went after Verstappen, who under pressure made a mistake into the hairpin at the end of the lap and allowed Vettel to go through.
