team-mate Lewis Hamilton was third which means that the two drivers have eight points splitting them with just six races remaining to the end of the season.

Despite being warned for brake management Nico Rosberg was always controlling the race in the front. After the safety car, who came out because of Hulkenberg's crash on the start, the German managed to establish a comfortable lead over Ricciardo and Hamilton.

's Kimi Raikkonen was on super-softs and pressured the Brit. The Finn eventually got past Hamilton to enter the podium spots.

After the second visit to pits Mercedes decided to switch to “plan B” and Hamilton started to push behind Raikkonen. He then made a surprise third stop to ulta-softs with just 16 laps to go. Ferrari caught by surprise asked Raikkonen to force the pace before he was asked to come in. However with a strong lap Hamilton managed to just get ahead of the Ferrari driver.

At the front Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo came in for another stint on super-softs, while Mercedes went for a two-strategy with Rosberg going to the end on softs. At that point The German had a 24 second lead, but in just seven laps it got cut to 5 seconds. However Ricciardo didn't get close enough to attempt a DRS overtake, but some traffic and Rosberg being allowed to push a little more troubled his final recovery.

Sebastian Vettel made a brilliant race. Starting from 19th place he made a great recovery with a long first stint with soft tires. He eventually finished fifth. With a late overtake Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished sixth ahead of McLarenMcLarenMcLarenUnited Kingdom, 1963 > present92 models
