BMW has shown two concepts for what a front-wheel drive 1 Series will look like

variant will get a cleaner engine option with under the EfficientDynamics brand.

The engine in the EfficientDynamics front-wheel drive 1 Series will be a plug-in hybrid version of BMW's new 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. BMW believes that it will be rated at 50g/km of CO2 or less when it hits the market. 

To improve efficiency, the EfficientDynamics model will also get a lower suspension, aerodynamic upgrades, a flat underbody and lighter wheels and tires.

While this might not be the most exciting car in the BMW stable, keep in my that the more clean models like the i3, i8 and EfficientDynamics 1 Series that BMW sells, the more high performance models it can offer.
