It will add 1,300 more workers to its third shift this fall to build even more Escapes. Ford will have 4,200 employees at its Louisville Assembly Plant. The new hires and changes to the factory to build the Escape and five other vehicles cost Ford $600 million.
The upgrade included 1,000 robots and 20 miles of conveyor belts.
“Louisville Assembly Plant’s reinvention illustrates how Ford is going further, continuing to invest in American manufacturing and new jobs while delivering even more of the fuel-efficient vehicles that give customers true power of choice," said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.
The new Escape just went on sale in the US with either a 2.0 liter four-cylinder or 1.6 liter four-cylinder that gets as much as 33mpg. The Escape is part of Ford's attempt to use global platforms to create regional vehicles. The Escape shares the platform with the KugaFord KugaUnited Kingdom, 2008 > 201226 versions
