Ford has released a statement for those concerned about the development of the new Focus ST, saying that everything is ‘on track’.
The company’s engineers have reportedly been punishing prototypes of the vehicle on a variety of roads including Californian freeways, German Autobahns and even the Nurburgring to ensure performance and driving dynamics are up to scratch. Tell-tale signs for spotting one of these test vehicles include a striking paint job, lowered suspension, larger wheels and a twin exhaust.
Power will be delivered to the new Focus ST via a high-performance version of Ford’s new 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine, which will aim to produce 246hp while achieving better fuel economy than the previous generation Focus ST.
The development team has also aimed to improve the driver experience by fine-tuning the Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) system and constructing seats which sit lower and offer better support.
Perfection is very important for Ford on the new Focus ST as highlighted by the company’s European chief program engineer, Matthias Tonn, who said: “We’re sweating all the details – fine-tuning, testing, and fine tuning again many of the small but critical details to make sure it is worthy of the ST badge. We will build upon and improve the ride, steering and handling strengths that defined the current European Focus ST.”
The new Focus ST - which is to become Ford’s first global performance car as it will now be available in North America and Asia - will go on sale next year.
