Lamborghini Veneno Roadster Unveiled on an Italian Aircraft Carrier

The Italian supercar maker rented the Italian aircraft carrier Nave Cavour and parked it in Abu Dhabi’s port on December 1 to give the car its world debut on December 1.

The Veneno Roadster is nearly identical to the Veneno coupe but with an open top. All nine cars will be built during 2014 for a price of €3.3 million each, excluding local taxes. All of the exterior panels are made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

The interior is entirely carbon fiber, including the central tunnel and side sills. Even the seats, are made from Lamborghini’s CarbonSkin woven carbon fiber fabric.

They pack 740hp (750ps) from a 6.5-liter V12 that gets it to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 220.6mph (355km/h). Each of the nine cars will be painted in whatever color that the buyer chooses, and the one shown in Abu Dhabi was painted in an exclusive color called Rosso Veneno.

Lamborghini claims that the Veneno has been designed to maximize downforce, even without a roof. The front end is designed to be a large wing to push the car down. The underbody is smooth and flows to a diffuser at the rear to create more downforce. Large openings at the top keep the engine cool, and the rear wing is adjustable. The wheels incorporate a carbon fiber ring that pull in cool air as they rotate to cool the carbon-ceramic brakes.

All of the cars come with permanent all-wheel drive and a pushrod suspension that allow the springs and dampers to be mounted horizontally.

The whole car has a dry weight of 1490kg (3,278lb).

VIPs at the unveiling included the Italian Ambassador to the UAE, fashion designer Giada Curti and former Italian national soccer team captain Fabio Cannavaro.
