in Rüsselsheim, and later in the week it appeared that the Bochum, Germany, plant might be closed down entirely. Opel has not given up the ghost yet, though. It is introducing a new 1.6l, direct injected, turbocharged four-cylinder with stop/start that it claims cuts CO2 emissions by 13% over its predecessor. Not only does it have this new four-cylinder, Opel is promising three new engine families in the next 12 months.
The new four-cylinder will be available in several power outputs and in multiple vehicles, but Opel is not saying much about either yet. Top models will have 200hp and 300Nm of torque, and the torque figure will be available from just 1,700rpm. Production of the new four-cylinder engine will not begin in Szentgotthardt, Hungary, until the end of the year.
“In just twelve months we are launching three completely new engine generations. This shows how fast we are introducing new products,” said Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke.
