Chief Operating Officer Carlos Tavares will step down from the company effective immediately, according to a statement released by Renault today.
The statement says that he left "in order to pursue other personal projects."
Until a replacement is hired, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn will take over Tavares' duties.
Tavares' leaving Renault comes as a bit of a surprise. His role since taking the position in 2011 has been to turn Renault around financially, and run day-to-day operations at the company.
