have announced just prior to the Tokyo Motor Show that it will work on several projects together including shared platforms and manufacturing. Nissan and Mitsubishi already had a limited partnership on developing small cars for Japan, but the new partnership will result in models that will be sold globally.
“Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors have jointly benefited from several collaborations in the past. I welcome the direction being taken towards this broader cooperation, creating new opportunities for Renault in addition to further leveraging the productive relationship between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors,” said Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn.
Among the planned models, they will co-develop a small, electric car and new Mitsubishi-branded sedans based on Renault platforms. While these will be the first cars developed under the partnership, both sides are promising that other projects will be considered in the future.
One sedan will be a full-size, D-segment sedan that will be sold in North America and be built at the Renault-Samsung factory in Busan, South Korea.
The second sedan will be sold globally in the C-segment, and its production location has not yet been decided.
They will also share electric vehicle technology and current-generation platforms.
