at the Tokyo Motor Show called the Twin Up. It combines an 800cc two-cylinder turbodiesel engine with a 36hp electric motor and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It is a version of the same powertrain in the found in the XL1.
The total drivetrain has 74hp and 159lb-ft (215Nm) of combined power, and energy for the electric motor is provided by an 8.6kWh lithium-ion battery. The diesel engine has a 33-liter fuel tank. It gets 214mpg US (256.8mpg UK or 1.1l/100km) fuel economy and emits 27g/km of CO2.
A clutch between the engine and motor allow them to operate independently, and it can be forced into electric mode at the push of a button for a 31-mile range. The driver can also force internal combustion engine to act as a generator for the batteries.
The Twin Up is almost identical to a standard car on the exterior. The front over hang is 30mm longer to accept the engine and motor, but otherwise it would be hard to tell. It has a total unladen weight of 1,205kg and rides on low rolling resistance 15in tires.
There are some changes inside with a completely digital instrument panel and a combination of Ceramic White fabric and leather with blue piping. The infotainment system is used for the automatic climate control and the navigation displays.
VW has not yet confirmed whether the concept will go into production.
