Renault concerned about money spent is not worth it

The next Smart is expected to use a front end like the recent concepts

*Update* We received a response from Renault, and this is why it is good to check up on these rumors. Renault no longer working on the Edison platform is only partially true.

"Renault and Daimler are continuing to develop the new platform for the successors of Twingo and Smart Fortwo. The vehicles will exist in 2-seater and 4-seater versions for smart and a 4-seater version for Twingo. Renault has declined  so far to develop a 2-seater version for Twingo's successor, as expected volumes did not justify such a development for Renault," said Jacques Verdonck, Renault-Nissan Alliance director for coordination with Daimler.

So the future Twingo is still under development, but there will be no two-seat version of the platfrom from Renault.

EVs. That leaves Mercedes to finish development on its own. We have contacted both Renault and Mercedes for comment and are awaiting a reply.

Mercedes is still developing the platform and still plans to have the next generation Smart Fortwo on the road in 2014. The new car will grow by about 30mm in length and 120mm in width. Engines will be a range of three-cylinders, but the sequential transmission will be dropped in favor of a standard manual or optional dual-clutch transmission.

The original plan was the Renault and Mercedes to share the platform, which is codenamed Edison, but have their own unique looks.

We will update you once we learn more.
