Spyker was founded by brothers Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker in Hilversum, Netherlands, in 1880, for coach and carriage production. In 1901 the Company commenced to manufacture the Spijker-Benz automobiles under Benz’s license and build a new factory, the Industriële Maatschappij Trompenburg. In 1903 the name Spijker was changed into Spyker to facilitate marketing abroad. Spykers were extremely luxurious, high quality and endurable cars, rated among the best in the world. In 1914, due to financial problems, the Company merged with the Dutch Aircraft Factory N.V. In 1922 the Company went bankrupt and was bought by one of its distribuitors and was reorganised under the name Spyker Automobielfabriek. In 1925, car production was ceased.
The rights to the Spyker brand were bought in 1999 by Victor Muller, who founded Spyker Automobielen BV , later changed to Spyker Cars NV. The new company produces racing, utility, handmade and customized cars.
