Mazda has said in the past that it is continuing to develop rotary engines, specifically as a range-extender for a series hybrid vehicle. The nice thing about rotaries is that they can easily be combined to increase power. So while a one-rotor version could be used as a range-extender, a two- or three-rotor version could be used in a sports car, especially with a turbo.
