Hanomag (Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG) appears in 1871, but the company  was founded by Georg Egestorff back in 1835, then under the name of Eisen-Giesserei und Maschinenfabrik Hannover. Its first object was the construction of steam engines. Later the Company diversified into farm machinery and locomotives. Its first petrol-powered automobile was launched only in 1925. Hanomag started producing low consumption models, in large numbers but even so car manufacture was not profitable. After WWI the company launched another model that was more successful but the pos-war depression affected the Company which was taken by Hannover City and the Vereinigte Stahlwerke in 1931 and reorganized under the name Hanomag Automobil und Schlepperbau GmbH. From 1932 to 1934 Hanomag launched two further models that were well accepted in the market. During WWII the company produced military vehicles, and after the war they focused on industrial vehicles never reverting to the automobile construction.
