In 2012, Chevrolet announced that it brings a Holden Commodore-based performance sedan to the US, called the SS. The sedan races in Nascar in 2013 and debuts to American buyers in late 2013 as a 2014 model.
It is a rear-wheel drive, V8-powered sedan. The car is based on the same chassis as the Camaro and Holden VF Commodore, and the SS will be built in Australia.
The SS debuts on track at the 2013 Daytona 500 Nascar race. The SS goes on sale in the third quarter of 2013, and Chevrolet will announce prices then.
The SS designation was first used on the Corvette in 1957 and has been used on many of Chevy's high performance models since then. The first production car to use the designator was the 1961 Impala SS.
This modern run of Australian muscle cars in the US started in 2004 with the Pontiac GTO that was based on the Holden Monaro. The next was the Pontiac G8 in 2009 that was based on the Holden Commodore. Even the current Camaro uses GM’s Zeta platform that underpins most large, rear-wheel drive Australian sedans like the Commodore, Caprice and Lumina.
topThe heart of the SS is the LS3 6.2-liter V8 with 415hp and 415lb-ft of torque that was also used in the previous generation Corvette among other GM performance models. The only transmission at launch is a six-speed manual that gets the car to 60mph in about five seconds.
Other performance enhancements include a sport-tuned electronic power steering system, 355mm Brembo brakes, 19in wheels with performance Bridgestone tires and an aluminum hood and trunk.
topThe car shows its power with a simple, aggressive design. The car is not breaking any design ground with a blunt nose and simple three-box design. There are a few chrome accents sprinkled around the body, and it also gets standard HID headlights with LED running lights.
The boxy design means a lot of interior room. There is 42in of front legroom and 39in of rear legroom. The SS comes with standard eight-way adjustable power, leather seats. Chevrolet’s MyLink Infotainment system is standard, and it comes with a Bose nine-speaker radio, color heads-up display, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert and a rear-view camera.
