FBS Engineering Ltd was founded in May 1998 by Andrew Barber at Haddenham, (Aylesbury) to build sports cars. Barber wanted a stylish and innovative low volume sports car and approached Coventry University for information. The university suggested he used one of its MA automotive design students. Student Giovanni Doglioli was the author of the winning design and Andrew Barber and Robin Hall provided the engineering for the FBS1 (the car name was later changed to Census)convertible, which made its debut in 2000 at the Stoneleigh Car Show. The car could be custom-built according to buyer’s requirements. Only 8 vehicles were built. The company went bankrupt in 2003.
