The seventh generation Toyota Corolla, also known as the E100 series, was conceived in 1991 but came out only two years later, in 1993. This model left the subcompact category of Toyota cars to be now on the compact class, as its dimensions and weight were higher, as well as the price. On the North American market there was no longer a coupé on the variants range. On its last production year, 1997, the 20 million barrier of cars sold was achieved by the Corolla and it became the top selling model of all time.
